I'll stick to my policy of choosing only one song of each participant, lest I should dilute my picks. Let's start with the girls and in the order in which they got ranked within SaReGaMaPa 2007.
Poonam
I must admit I admire her more for her struggle in life. That story often takes precedence over her singing, and unfortunately so, because I think she is good enough to go straight to the recording studios. Most people think a girl should be able to sing soft romantic songs (like Sumedha) or should be able to sing in a cabaret (like I am sure Mauli certainly can). That is very unfortunate because there ought to be room for other styles, e.g. the full-throttle ones, that I believe Poonam, Raja, and Musarrat excel in. In a man's world, I am sure the likes of Raja and Musarrat will be more appreciated than Poonam - how unfortunate! I am guilty of the same, for I had to think long and hard before I chose the song below, in which I don't expect her to match Lata Mangeshkar, but to just hold her own. I thought she did.
Sumedha
1) The video below gets interrupted twice but stay back to watch it complete.
2) May I recommend that you don't watch the video while listening to the song - eye candy is distracting.
3) I also recommend watching out for the portion starting - "Tujh bina pagli yeh purwayi"
Mauli
Sorry Mauli fans - she has her own style and I have respect for that. I just don't happen to be a fan of that style. I'll say this much that if you haven't heard of Mauli, you will do well to search "Maiyya" in google video.
Musarrat
Sometimes, it annoys me to see a singer move his arms while singing - as if he were showing a design document of his final product - the song. I'd rather he just sing the song, except if moving his arms helps him sing better. In any case, Musarrat is different - an eminently likeable guy. If the audience's and judges' reactions in this video annoy you (I happen to like more composed folks - the non-jazbaatis), maybe stop the video as soon as he finishes singing; don't wait for the comments of the gurus. Also, may I recommend another way to respect this guy - how about you try and sing this song? You'll respect Musarrat even more after that. (BTW - No, I haven't even dared to try that!)
Harpreet
My one problem with Harpreet is that he lacks supreme confidence in his own abilities. If he has that, he doesn't have to rely on others' support. He was in my opinion a little unlucky too - he got voted out the very week I was rooting for him to be # 1. The song was "Vaada raha sanam"; I'll therefore choose this song ahead of some of his others.
Junaid
He was perhaps the favorite of young girls because of his good looks. I thought I agreed with Bappi-da about him being weak on the low notes and I think that cost him his place in the show. As for his best song, though "Aisa pehli baar hua hai" seems to have been most well-received, I chose this one because Junaid made me like a song that I seemed to hate for only one reason - that I didn't like the actor in the song and in the movie.
Sunil Kumar
Lots of talent and little knowledge about reserving your best performances when it matters the most. By the time I started following SaReGaMaPa 2007, Sunil was just about exiting, after a weak performance in an elimination round. Just as he was out, he sang a brilliant last song that made me think - "Dumb guy, why didn't he sing this song before facing elimination?" Anyway, I went back and googled and thought this one was very Suresh-Wadkar-esque. Sunil probably deserved to stay a little longer in the show, if not for his weak performances when it mattered most.
