Hindi movies - Taste test

This post is intended to help you figure out if your taste in Hindi movies matches mine. In case it doesn't, you know better than to read through this movie review section I am going to start soon. To just put a few facts across, my taste matches with hardly anyone else's I know! Often when someone recommends I watch a movie, I know which movie not to pick. Hence my reasoning in expressly putting you through a "Taste Test". I don't want to lose a blog audience to the fact that you don't enjoy my taste in movies.

Movies that I didn't like much: (let me give myself exactly 5 mins to think - I am going by popular movies, listed in the order in which they come to my mind.)

  • Bobby (in fact, no Raj Kapoor movies .. at all, not even the songs)
  • Dev Anand movies .. naah, I can appreciate the themes he tried in his movies, looooved most songs in his movies but.. but still, naah, didn't like the movies as much as the songs)
  • Silsila.. well, I loved the songs .. but.. naah, didn't quite like the story (same holds true for most Yash Chopra movies - where I loved the music but not the movie)
  • Deewar (loved Amitabh Bacchan but .. didn't quite like the angry young man's movies)
  • The 80's hits (I can only remember Tezaab, Maine Pyar Kiya, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak)
  • Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (ya right, I don't like that either.. not that I hate it, but .. naah)
  • Baazigar (theek thaak)
  • Darr (theek thaak)
  • Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (let me clarify, no Rajshri movies)
  • Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (a cut-paste of Dil To Pagal Hai as far as I am concerned)
  • Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (I wouldn't touch a Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie with a 10-foot pole; I admire his movies' elaborate settings and artwork, and sometimes the music; it stops there. Too much melodrama in all of his movies. I don't recollect any of his movies without headache)
  • Kaho Na Pyaar Hai (not that bad or anything but.. theek thaak)
  • Lagaan (I know it went to Oscars, and I know Aamir Khan acted great .. but for me it was theek thaak)
  • Rang De Basanti (same league as Lagaan.. did you say "Excuse me?")
  • Veer Zaara (bhaago yaar... can't stand it)
  • Koyi Mil Gaya
  • Black (haven't seen it but it is enough that it is a Sanjay Leela Bhansali production)
  • Hum Hain Raahi Pyaar Ke

Alright, I'll stop there. I had to google a Filmfare awards list towards the end. It gets easy when you get all of them at one place. Anyway, so what's left - did you wonder?

Movies that I liked: (let me give myself exactly 5 mins to think - listed in the order in which they come to my mind. By the way, I am not seeking to impress you with my taste, I am merely sharing my taste to see how far it matches yours.)

(Exception: Dil To Pagal Hai - I merely meant to be crazy about something.. see this post.. and that too 10 years ago, so while I count the movie among my favorites, I do hope you know it doesn't represent my taste)
  • Golmaal (the Amol Palekar one)
  • Chupke Chupke (the Dharmendra-Amitabh one)
  • Monsoon Wedding
  • Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron
  • Sholay
  • Rajnigandha
  • Amar Prem
  • Zubeidaa
  • Bheja Fry
  • Dil Chaahta Hai
  • Charulata

I guess you get it.. or maybe you don't (How can one like Sholay and Charulata at the same time?). You can stay the course and read the rest of the posts in this section, OR let's part ways but only for this section. Stay with my blog..

About the posts that are going to come up in this section:
Rather than critique a movie, let me just tell you how I manage to enjoy the movie. Similar to "gud-ka-zaika lines" that I put out for my WET BAR (Hindi music) section, I'll look to point out dialogue lines to watch out for as you watch a movie.
