English songs - Angler's collection - Vol 1 of 1

It was my first birthday after joining college (1993-1997). Those of us whose birthdays came in the Oct-through-Feb timeframe threw a party for the rest. Oh yes, it was great fun. Someone thought it wise to gift me a music cassette. That was sweet but.. well.. I wasn't into English music you see. I did have an intention, which I expressed on a previous post, to get into Western music, but I had almost given up after the first 6 months at the college dorm. Now that it was a gift, well.. so I had to listen. It was supposed to be truly exceptional collection, so much so that the very same friends (including one called Golu) who gifted it to me sought to borrow the cassette every now and then. They were probably disappointed with the fact that my interest in Western music wasn't spurred on by the gift; I share in their disappointment, but it is what it is.

Now, I do not recollect the exact name of the collection (first thought it might be "Now That's What I Call Music", but no it wasn't); the cover was green, and the other thing I can distinctly remember is the very first song - "Always". I share that song with you today, and some others that I was able to pick since then. In the last 1 year, I've started watching American Idol. Maybe that might spur me on .. let's see.

BTW - for those wondering what an angler is, it is a person catching fish with a simple rod - probably the slowest way to catch fish. Likewise, I am getting to know English songs, the slowest way possible.. perhaps.

Always - by Atlantic Starr

Lyrics for "Always": (Source: oracleband.net)

Girl you are to me
All that a woman should be
and I dedicate my life to you, always
A love like yours is rare
It must have been sent from up above
and I know you'll stay this way, for always

And we both know
That our love will grow
and forever it will be you and me
Ooh, You're like the sun
Chasing all the rain away
When you come around
You bring brighter days
You're the perfect one for me
And you forever will be
And I will love you so, for always

Come with me my sweet
Let's go make a family
And they will bring us joy for always
Oh boy I love you so
Can't find enough way to let you know
But you can be sure, I'm yours, for always

And we both know
That our love will grow
and forever it will be you and me
Ooh, You're like the sun
Chasing all the rain away
When you come around
You bring brighter days
You're the perfect one for me
And you forever will be
And I will love you so, for always

It must've been love - by Roxette

Lyrics for "It must've been love": (Source: lyricsfreak.com)

Lay a whisper on my pillow, leave the winter on the ground. I wake up lonely, theres air of silence in the bedroom and all around. touch me now, I close my eyes and dream away.

It must have been love but its over now. it must have been good but I lost it somehow. it must have been love but its over now. from the moment we touched til the time had run out.

Make-believing were together, that Im sheltered by your heart. but in and outside Ive turned to water like a teardrop in your palm. and its a hard winters day, I dream away.

It must have been love but its over now, it was all that I wanted, now Im living without. it must have been love but its over now, its where the water flows, its where the wind blows.

Take My Breath Away

Lyrics for "Take My Breath Away":
(Source: metrolyrics.com)

Watching every motion in my foolish lover's game

On this endless ocean finally lovers know no shame
Turning and returning to some secret place inside
Watching in slow motion as you turn around and say

Take my breath away (2)

Watching I keep waiting still anticipating love
Never hesitating to become the fated ones
Turning and returning to some secret place to hide
Watching in slow motion as you turn to me and say,

My Love,
Take my breath away

Through the hourglass I saw you, in time you slipped away

When the mirror crashed I called you, and turned to hear you say
If only for today I am unafraid

Take my breath away (2)

Watching every motion in this foolish lover's game
Haunted by the notion somewhere there's a love in flames
Turning and returning to some secret place inside
Watching in slow motion as you turn my way and say

Take my breath away (4)

November Rain - by Bandook aur Gulaab (I mean Guns N' Roses)

Lyrics for "November Rain": (Source: lyrics007.com)

When I look into your eyes
I can see a love restrained
But darlin' when I hold you
Don't you know I feel the same
'Cause nothin' lasts forever
And we both know hearts can change
And it's hard to hold a candle
In the cold November rain
We've been through this such a long long time
Just tryin' to kill the pain
But lovers always come and lovers always go
An no one's really sure who's lettin' go today
Walking away
If we could take the time to lay it on the line
I could rest my head
Just knowin' that you were mine
All mine
So if you want to love me
then darlin' don't refrain
Or I'll just end up walkin'
In the cold November rain

Do you need some time...on your own
Do you need some time...all alone
Everybody needs some time...on their own
Don't you know you need some time...all alone
I know it's hard to keep an open heart
When even friends seem out to harm you
But if you could heal a broken heart
Wouldn't time be out to charm you

Sometimes I need some time...on my
own Sometimes I need some time...all alone
Everybody needs some time...on their own
Don't you know you need some time...all alone

And when your fears subside
And shadows still remain, ohhh yeahhh
I know that you can love me
When there's no one left to blame
So never mind the darkness
We still can find a way
'Cause nothin' lasts forever
Even cold November rain

Don't ya think that you need somebody
Don't ya think that you need someone
Everybody needs somebody
You're not the only one
You're not the only one

In the 10 years after college (1997-2007), a few more friends tried introducing me to Western music, but to no avail - and I ended up disappointing them too. I picked up less than 4-5 songs in those roughly 10 years. Of those, I like the one below. I think it is a girl's song (which means, in boy's circles, there is sometimes a bit of stigma associated with disclosing your liking for such a song). But who cares, I like it.

As I lay me down to sleep - by Sophie Hawkins

Lyrics for "As I lay me down to sleep": (Source: lyrics007.com)

It felt like springtime on this February morning
In the courtyard birds were singing your praise
I'm still recalling things you said to make me feel alright
I carried them with me today, Now

(chorus) As I lay me down to sleep
This I pray
That you will hold me dear
Though I'm far away
I'll whisper your name into the sky
And I will wake up happy

I wonder why I feel so high
Though I am not above the sorrow
Heavy hearted
Till you call my name
And it sounds like church bells
Or the whistle of a train
On a summer evening
I'll run to meet you
Barefoot barely breathing

(repeat chorus)

It's not too near for me
Like a flower I need the rain
Though it's not clear to me
Every season has its change
And I will see you
When the sun comes out again

More recently, I took a liking for this song after it featured on a TV commercial.

I hope you dance - by Leann Womack

Lyrics for "I hope you dance": (Source: lyrics007.com)
I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat
But always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed
I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you'll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Living might mean taking chances
But they're worth taking
Lovin' might be a mistake
But it's worth making
Don't let some hell bent heart
Leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out
Reconsider
Give the heavens above
More than just a passing glance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
(Time is a real and constant motion always)
I hope you dance
(Rolling us along)
I hope you dance
(Tell me who)
I hope you dance
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
(Where those years have gone)

I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you'll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
Dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance
(Time is a real and constant motion always)
I hope you dance
(Rolling us along)
I hope you dance
(Tell me who)
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
I hope you dance
(Where those years have gone)

(Tell me who)
I hope you dance
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
(Where those years have gone)
